Summer Internship Program for High School Students

Summer Internship Program for High School Students

Overall Program Goal: The overall goal of this program is to promote interest in biomedical research as a potential career. This is a highly competitive program and less than 20% of the students applying will be chosen.

Program Opportunity: This program gives students the opportunity to participate in research projects of either basic science or clinical orientation.

Internship Program History: Since its inception, over 151 high school students have successfully completed the program. Students come from both public and private schools.

Internship Program Timeline: Students work with investigators for a four-week period (40 hours a week) and attend weekly scientific seminars to enhance their knowledge of the different aspects of research, particularly as they relate to women and infants’ health. In addition, they attend informal lunch meetings where junior and senior investigators discuss biomedical science as a career. At the end of the program, the students present their work via PowerPoint to the other participants as well as the faculty of the Research Institute and their associates.

Start / End Dates: The start and end dates of the program are flexible (between May and August) and are coordinated between the investigator and the student. A stipend of $400 is available to each student.

TB Test: Students will be given a TB test (pending parental authorization) if they have not had one within the past year.

Work Permit: A work permit may be needed. Please inquire about the process prior to the end of the school year.

Housing and/or residential assistance is not available. Out of town applicants should inform us of their intended living arrangements. Work permits need to be obtained from Pennsylvania.

Application Process: If you are interested in applying for a student position in the 2010 Summer Internship Program for High School Students, please submit the following information:

•    The application form (completed by the student)
•    A personal statement of approximately one page discussing your science background, career
goals, and expectations for a summer research experience (completed by the student)
